32nd Senior Four-Ball Day 1 Recap

Scores

LIGONIER, Pa. – One round is in the books at the 32nd Pennsylvania Golf Association (PAGA) Senior Four-Ball Championship, with crowded leaderboards in both the Senior (55-64) and Super-Senior (65+) Divisions. With the defending champions from last year’s tournaments not returning, it is anyone’s to win.

In the Senior Division, the fresh pairing of Dan Brown (Allegheny Country Club) and Bob Crnjarich (Manada Golf Club) sits in first place after finishing the day with a five-under-par 65. Crnjarich logged an impressive first round, with six total birdies (on holes No. 1, 2, 8, 15, 16, and 18) to set the tone, with Brown also contributing in key spots – for example, his par on hole No. 4 stabilized things after a Crnjarich bogey.

Four other pairings are still within striking distance of the leaders. Douglas Hallman and Todd Mostoller (both from Colonial Golf & Tennis Club) are in second place with a 66 (-4), just a single stroke behind. The Oakmont Country Club duo of Paul Mazeski and Rod Piatt fired a 67 (-3) and trail the leaders by two strokes.

In fourth place, James Hughes (CC of Harrisburg) and William Smith (LedgeRock GC) shot a 68 (-2). Rounding out the top 5 is Chambersburg Country Club’s David Eubanks and John Lowder with an even-par 70.

Over in the Super-Senior Division, Pittsburgh Field Club’s Bob Thomas and Jim Wallisch have opened up a four-stroke lead on the field after shooting a four-under 66. Thomas’s front nine featured three birdies (on 1, 5, and 7) while Wallisch carded a trio of birdies on the back nine (on 14, 16, and 18) in addition to one on the par-four sixth hole.

The closest competitors are three teams tied for second place with an even-par 70 and includes the Hannastown Golf Club pairing of Bob Allshouse and David DeNezza, Larry McClure (Berwick GC) and Scott Scheirer (Frosty Valley), and JR Cattoni (Williamsport CC) and Ben Cook (Bucknell GC).

Play continues with tomorrow’s final round on Tuesday, August 27.

The Pennsylvania Golf Association would like to thank the staff and membership of Ligonier Country Club for the hospitality shown during today’s rounds, with additional thanks going to DICK’S Sporting Goods for sponsorship of the event.
