Frazier leads by two strokes after day one in Senior Amateur

ORWIGSBURG, Pa. - Jeff Frazier has a pedigree of success, highlighted by his win earlier this year in the Pennsylvania Golf Association’s Senior Match Play at his home course, Carlisle Country Club. Through one round of the 63rd Senior Amateur at Schuylkill Country Club, Frazier is poised to make a run at a second state title this summer. Frazier posted a 70 (-2) and leads by two in the event, which was presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. 

Frazier, of Carlisle Country Club, notched two birdies on the opening nine. He recorded his first on hole the par-5 third hole, then another on the par-4 fifth. He fought off a brief hiccup with a bogey on the ninth hole by making birdie on the No. 12, and after that birdie, he parred out the rest of the way on the classic Donald Ross design.

There are three golfers all tied for second at even par 72 - Olde Homestead’s David Blichar, Moselem Springs’s Perry Landis and Commonwealth National’s James Gavaghan. Blichar rolled in a pair of birdies on his way to the solid finish, while Landis got off to a hot start with a 3-under 33 on the opening nine before falling back to even at the conclusion of the round. Gavaghan, meanwhile, had four birdies on the round. He fought back as two of the birdies came immediately after he’d made bogey.

Meanwhile, in the Super-Senior division, there were multiple golfers who finished under par. Gary Daniels of Applebrook Golf Club ended up shooting a 69 (-3) in a round where he nailed four birdies. Daniels had birdies on the 3rd, 9th, 14th and 18th holes at Schuylkill. Other than his lone bogey (No. 11), Daniels kept his score in red numbers by recording pars on every other hole. Daniels had never seen the course before, so he was pleased with the round, especially thanks to his play from the tee box.   

“I drove it really well today and that let me have no more than 100 yards into most holes,” Daniels said. “I hadn’t seen the course before so it was just a real steady round and the game felt good.” 

Daniels is looking to replicate his performance for tomorrow but will have to hold off a bevy of challengers. Similar to the Senior division, three players all finished at even for the round - LuLu Country Club’s Roc Irey, Hannastown Golf Club’s Robert Allshouse and two-time event champ Don Donatoni, of White Manor Country Club.
