Knapp, Rothaus and Jones win Senior Match-Play Titles
Chambersburg Country Club played host to the 2023 Senior Math-Play Championship. In the Women's division, Merion Golf Club's Loraine Jones used steady play to beat defending champion Karen Siegel of Commonwealth National in the semi-final 2 & 1 and then defeated Northampton Country Club's Noreen Mohler 4 & 2 in the final. In the Men's Super-Senior division, Five Pond's Brian Rothaus Defeated Glenmaura Country Club's Vince Scarpetta Jr. 5 & 4 in the final. Rothaus had victories over Scranton's Michael Vassil and LuLu's Roc Irey on his way to the final match. In the Senior Men's division, the final featured old friends and long-time rivals Sean Knapp of Hannastown Golf Club and Rick Stimmel of Connoquenessing Country Club. Stimmel would reach the final with victories over Mark Yost (Penn National GC), Carlisle Country Club's Jeff Frazier with a birdie on the 20th hole and a 3 &2 victory over Lancaster Country Club's John Barry. Kapp's path to the final was equally as challenging with a 1-up victory over 2-time champion and St. Clair CC's David Brown and then a 4 & 2 victory over Wyoming Valley Country Club's John Olczewski. In the final Knapp would birdie four of the first seven holes to build a 3-up lead. Stimmel would square the match with wins on holes 8, 9 and 10. The pair halved holes 11-14 and then Knapp earned a 1-up lead with a birdie on 15. The pair would halve 16-18 as Knapp would secure his 1-up Championship.
