Opening rounds complete at 15th Father/Son and 6th Parent/Child Championships
BERNVILLE, Pa. – It’s still anyone’s tournament in both the Pennsylvania Golf Association (PAGA) 15th annual Father/Son and 6th annual Parent/Child Championships, with multiple pairings still in contention after the first rounds of play on Monday at Heidelberg Country Club. Both Championships use a Modified Chapman format, where both players on a team tee off then hit a second shot using their partner's ball. After both players' second shots, the team chooses one ball location to finish the hole using an alternate shot format. After the first 18 holes there is a tie at the top of the Father/Son leaderboard, with Mike and Mick Farlling (Carlisle CC) and Clay and Brady Davidson (West Shore CC) both finishing the day with two-under-par 68’s. All of the action for the Davidsons was in the front nine—with five birdies and three bogeys—while holding an even-par 36 on the back nine to complete their round. The Farlling duo birdied three holes (No. 3, 9, and 11) and bogeyed just the par-four 10th hole. Just two strokes behind the leaders are the defending champions, James and Grayson Wingerter. The pair, who also won the title in 2021, logged an even-par 70 thanks to a superb back nine featuring four birdies (on 12, 13, 15, and 18) to counterbalance four bogeys, three of which came on the front nine. Plenty of other teams are still in contention, including three tied at 71 (+1), just three strokes back of the leaders: Carson and Brent Will (Carlisle CC), Andrew and Thomas Porsch (CC of Harrisburg), and James and Mike Hughes (CC of Harrisburg / Carlisle CC). The Parent/Child standings are currently led by Brandon and Makensy Knaub (Country Club of York), who were into the clubhouse with a one-over-par 71. A lone bogey on hole No. 18 marred an otherwise solid round of golf for the duo, who made par on the first seventeen holes. Just one stroke behind the leaders is the defending champion duo of Craig and Ella McRoberts (Valley Brook CC), who finished Monday with a two-over-par 72 which included four bogeys but also an excellent recovery on the back nine, with birdies on holes No. 13 and 16. Daniel and McKylie Boreman (Carlisle CC), who were runners-up to the McRoberts last summer, currently sit in third place with a four-over 74 (three strokes back), while Jason and Emilee Barkley (Moselem Springs GC) are right behind with a five-over 75. The final pairing of Robert Cooper and Allison Wix (CC of Harrisburg / The Links at Gettysburg), who were the event’s inaugural champions in 2019, are in fifth with a total of 81 (+11). Play continues tomorrow with the final 18 holes of each Championship. The Pennsylvania Golf Association would like to thank the staff and membership of Heidelberg Country Club for the hospitality shown during today’s rounds, with additional thanks going to DICK’S Sporting Goods for sponsorship of the event.
