Sollon opens up six-shot lead at 108th Pennsylvania Open
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Round two of the 108th Pennsylvania Open Championship is complete at St. Clair Country Club, with professional Jake Sollon opening up a six-shot lead in the Overall standings heading into Wednesday’s final round. Sollon, of Valley Brook Country Club, was tied for first place at five-under-par after yesterday’s opening round and fired a four-under 68 on Tuesday to extend his lead. Sollon’s second round featured five birdies – on holes No. 1, 4, 11, 14, and 18 – and just one bogey, which came on 12. Sollon is trying to win his second PA Open title, having previously won it back in 2022 at Longue Vue Club. Anything can still happen on the final day, though, and plenty of other golfers are still in contention on the Overall leaderboard, with 44 making the cut to the final round. A group of three are tied for second place with two-day totals of three-under-par 141 and include Gregor Meyer (Hannastown Golf Club), Mike Van Sickle (who shared the lead with Sollon after round one), and amateur Tanner Johnson of Nemacolin Country Club. Meyer followed up his round of 70 (-2) from Monday with a 71 (-1) on Tuesday that had a lot of ups and downs, with five birdies, six bogeys, and an eagle on 14. Van Sickle bogeyed three holes and birdied 14 to finish at 74 (+2) on Tuesday, while Johnson carded a three-under 69 in round two with birdies on 5, 8, 10, 13, 14. Johnson added that round to his even-par 72 from Monday to lead the Amateur standings by three strokes and is the only golfer currently under par. He is being chased by a pair at even-par, though: Hannastown GC’s Nicholas Turowski and Philadelphia Publinks’ Ricky Calve are tied for second place in the Amateur standings and tied for eighth in the Overall standings. Other competitors in the top 10 on the Overall leaderboard include a pair tied for fifth with two-day totals of 142 (-2), Conor McGrath (Huntingdon Valley CC) and Kyle Vance (Cedarbrook CC), as well as JD Dornes, who shot up the leaderboard with a three-under 69 in round two and sits alone in seventh place with a total of 143 (-1) for the tournament. JD Hughes, who was also tied with Sollon for the lead after the first round, now sits tied for eighth place after a five-over 77 on Tuesday. Joining him is Daniel Obremski, who has shot two consecutive rounds of even par, and Tanner Grzegorczyk (Longue Vue Club), who also has accumulated a total of 144 (E) after two days of competition. Defending champion Kevin Kraft is currently tied for 13th place at 145 (+1) along with Austin Lemieux, who led the Amateur standings after the first round. Play continues tomorrow with the final round, with tee times beginning at 8:32 a.m. The Pennsylvania Golf Association would like to thank the staff and membership of St. Clair Country Club for the hospitality shown during today’s rounds. Additional thanks, as always, go to DICK’S Sporting Goods for sponsorship of the event. |
