Penn National Golf Club -
The Pennsylvania Junior Championship started yesterday at Penn National Golf Club's Founders course in Fayetteville, PA. The field of 120 young men is broken down into three different age divisions, the 14-17 age group, the 12-13 age group, and finally, the 11 & under age group. Along with the individual championship on the line, a junior team tournament title is on the line. Last year's junior champion was Chad Bricker, and last year's team title went to The Club at Nevillewood.
The weather was ominous at times but eventually yielded, resulting in the full completion of the first round of play. With a Bogey on the last hole Jimmy Markovitz of The Club at Nevillewood fired a 6-under par 66 to hold a four stroke lead over the field.
Second round play began early Wednesday morning at Penn National Golf Club's second gem, the Iron Forge course. The Iron Forge course is the newer of the two Penn National golf courses. Tee times ran all morning, with the leaders going off at 1:30 p.m. After a grueling day, a charging John Popeck, who shot 4-under par 68, and a surging Benjamin Fellman who shot 2-under par 70, first round leader Jimmy Markovitz was able to hold off the field. Markowitz shot a solid even par round of 72 to win the 55th Pennsylvania State Junior Championship. Low rounds of the day went to John Popeck from The Club at Nevillewood and Nathan Sutherland from Berkshire Country Club who were able to take advantage of the terrific playing conditions and shoot terrific 4-under par rounds of 68.
The team competition turned into a landslide for The Club of Nevillewood thanks to the brilliant play of John Popeck, Jimmy Markovitz, and Stephen Markowitz.
