Par on the final hole clinches Timby's win

Monday, May 22, 2006

BY ANDREW STAUBOf The Patriot-News

After sinking a putt for par on the 18th green at Dauphin Highlands, Thomas Timby Jr. plucked his ball out of the hole just as he did on any other hole yesterday.

No celebration. No Tiger Woods-esque fist pump. Nothing.

It wasn't the reaction the casual observer would expect from someone who had just won the Pennsylvania Amateur Public Links Championship.

While officials knew he needed only a par to win, Timby wasn't certain. In fact, when an official congratulated Timby, he asked "Are you sure?"

"It's hard to tell," he said in the clubhouse after his win officially made the books. "You never know until you sign your card and they say your name."

After Timby signed his card -- he shot an even-par 144 over the two-day tournament -- officials indeed called his name.

While Timby could relax in the clubhouse with his winner's crystal, his day on the course was nothing close to a stroll across the greens. Strong winds, gusting to almost 35 mph, hampered play on the course and caused headaches for golfers.

While Saturday's round featured strong wind, some golfers estimated yesterday's gusts to be more than twice as powerful. Even Timby, whose low drive style fits well with windy conditions, said gusts affected play.

"It almost felt unplayable there for a few holes," he said.

Timby entered the day tied for first with Dominic Schiavone with a 1-under 70. As the wind picked up on the second day, Timby continued to play well while Schiavone struggled, shooting an 80 on his way to dropping to ninth.

Peter Toole, last year's champion, finished second with a 1-over 145. Afterward, Toole praised Timby for his win -- especially given the windy conditions.

"He most definitely deserves the win being at even par for these two days," Toole said.

Toole also heaped praise on Dauphin Highlands, calling it "awesome" for its smooth, fast greens and overall conditions.

"We play a lot of good golf courses in the state," he said. "This is definitely up there."

David Dankmyer and James Bohn, whose brother Jason plays on the PGA Tour, finished at 2-over 146, but Dankmyer got the third-place nod for his four-stroke advantage over Bohn on the second day. Jud Gemmill, who won the event in 2004, rounded out the top five at 4-over 148.

Wally Bylinowski won the Senior Division with a 6-over 150.

Timby, who qualified for last year's USGA Mid-Amateur Championships, hasn't always listed golf as his best sport. While in college at Saint Joseph's he played lacrosse, and while growing up he played baseball. But now, at age 35 with a family to care for, Timby said golf is about all he has time to do when he's not hanging out with his family.

When he finally gets back to Doylestown, he'll have a chance to spend time with his family and most likely he'll receive plenty of congratulations from friends and family.

And, maybe now that his scorecard has long been signed, he'll be able to celebrate a little more, too.

"It's pretty cool," Timby said. "To take a whole weekend away from my family and then win this, it's definitely an accomplishment."
