Cordaro, Schlachter fire 29 on final 9 holes
for Senior Better-Ball title

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.-Joe Cordaro of the Longue Vue Club and Paul Schlachter of The Club at Nevillewood used an eagle on the final hole (par 5, 501 yards) to sweep into the lead and capture the Pennsylvania Senior Better-Ball Championship presented by Your Pennsylvania Toyota Dealers at Williamsport Country Club (par 70, 6,501 yards).

Schlachter, 58, of Bridgeville, Pa., and Cordaro, 55, of Pittsburgh, Pa., finished at 7-under-par 133 for the two rounds. First-round co-leader King Knox of Lancaster CC and Andy Tompos of Lancaster Host Resort tied for second with Lee Lykens and Don Erickson of Totteridge Golf Club and Indiana Country Club, respectively, a stroke back.

Cordaro and Schlachter bogeyed two of first seven holes to fall back to even for the tournament before making a remarkable push.

It started on the 435-yard, par 4, 8th hole when Schlachter holed an 81-yard wedge for birdie after having to punch out from under a tree. The pair was 1-under after 27 holes, and trailed leaders Lykens and Erickson by four strokes. Cordaro birdied the 10th hole (par 3,150 yards) to keep his team’s momentum and then Schlachter took charge, recording three birdies and an eagle in his final seven holes. Schlachter knocked a 6-iron to 12 feet for the eventual clinching three. The duo posted a 6-under-par 29 on the back nine.

The victory was Schlachter’s sixth career state title and his second Senior Better-Ball victory. This was Cordaro’s first Senior Better-Ball crown. He has won three Better-Ball Championships.

In the Super-Senior Division, Warren Deakins and Richard Smith of Philadelphia CC (par 71, 6,132 yards) fired an 8-under-par 63 to finish at 134 and walked away with the title by five strokes. The team entered the day two shots in back of eventual second-place finishers Charles Watterson and Bill Douds of St. Clair CC. Deakins and Smith took the Senior Division title in 1995 at The Club at Nevillewood.
