Middle Amateur Results

Thompson Crowned 1998 Mid-Am. Champion
One hundred and twenty men, age thirty and above, gathered at Saucon Valley's Grace course for the fifth annual Middle Amateur Championship. The Grace course, a demanding 7051 yard par 72 design was a fantastic host for this year's event.

After the first round of match play, Sean Knapp looked as if he was headed for a three-peat with a 4&2 victory over Dave Smith, Indiana. However, Overbrook's Andy Thompson jumped out in front of Knapp making four birdies in eight holes. Unwilling to relinquish his lead, Thompson hung on for a 1-up victory. Thompson then defeated 1995 Middle Amateur champion, Steve Savor of Alcoma, 2&1 in the semifinals.

The Championship match featured the length of Chris Sekella, Spring-Ford, against the shot making of Andy Thompson. After many missed opportunities, the match proceeded to the final hole with Thompson leading 1-up. A par four was all Thompson needed for victory. After six rounds in four days, Andy Thompson could take a well deserved rest as 1998 Middle Amateur Champion
