Merion GC's Dannenberg named 2010 President

  Charles R. Dannenberg of Merion Golf Club was elected President of the Pennsylvania Golf Association at the Association’s Annual Meeting held earlier this fall.

  “I have thoroughly enjoyed the six years as a member of the PaGA Executive Committee,” Dannenberg said. “The many people I have met - committee members, volunteers, staff and tournament participants - have enriched my golf experience. It is an excellent way for me to give back to this great game of golf.”

  Giving back has always been a part of Dannenberg’s life. He served for many years as a board member, officer, fundraiser and chair of numerous committees at the YMCA of Central Chester County (now the Brandywine Valley YMCA). He was honored as the Y’s Volunteer of the year in 1996.   Dannenberg was also a member of the Springfield College’s Alumni Council for many years, later becoming President,  and a member of the college’s Trustee Board. 

  A manufacturers’ representative and life long resident of the West Chester area, Mr. Dannenberg lives in East Goshen Township with his wife Anne, a physician and avid golfer.  They have four grandchildren under the age of 5 and hope to interest them in “Pennsylvania golf.”

  “Our Centennial year of 2009 was a tremendous success,” said Dannenberg. “ Congratulations to President Raymond Mott for his leadership this past year.”

  Highlights of the season included the Pennsylvania Open held at Oakmont Country Club, won by Justin Smith, the State Amateur at Waynesborough Country Club, won by Nathan Smith. The PAGA’s team of Sean Knapp, Nathan Smith and Michael Van Sickle who won the USGA State Team Championship at The Country Club of St. Albans (Missouri). This is the first victory for a Pennsylvania team in the tournament’s history.

  The upcoming year’s Open will be held at Applebrook Golf Club and the Amateur will take place at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.

  A new event will be introduced in the 2010 season. The Pennsylvania Father-Son Championship to be held at Hershey Country Club honoring William Davis, former PAGA Executive Committee member, and son Mike Davis, Director of Competitions at the USGA.

  “It is wonderful volunteering,” said Dannenberg, “ with the support of the professional staff of our organization. At the PAGA we are blessed with great talent that enables our Executive Committee and volunteers to have an enjoyable and rewarding experience.  These are exciting times for Pennsylvania golf and the PAGA as we begin our second century,”

  Dannenberg added, “and our message to Pennsylvania golfers is ‘the best is yet to come.’”

  Officers working with Mr. Dannenberg include Vice-Presidents Pete Richter of Hershey Country Club and John McMurdy of Indiana Country Club, and Secretary-Treasurer King Knox of Lancaster Country Club.
