Six share lead at PA Middle-Amateur Six share lead at PA Middle-Amateur

Gladwyne, Pa. - On a picture-perfect day in suburban Philadelphia six players fired rounds of one-over par 72 to share the first round lead at the Pennsylvania Middle-Amateur Championship. Philadelphia Country Club (par-71, 6,865-yards), site of last year's U.S. Women's Amateur Championship and the 1939 U.S. Open, proved to be a true test of golf for these players 25 years-old and above.

Rich Pruchnik of West Chester G & CC held a three shot lead after the morning wave of play. He made birdies on holes 2, 3, and 8 (his 11^th, 12^th, and 17^th holes of the day) to get him to one-under par but a double-bogey on his last hole (No. 9) put him back in black numbers.

Two-time past champion Sean Knapp (1995 and 1996) of St. Jude GC led a group of five players who also finished at one-over par 72 in the afternoon. Knapp's fellow-competitor, P. Chet Walsh, birdied the last hole (par-4, 392 yards) on his home course to tie the lead. Greg Angelillo, Moselem Springs GC; Don Erickson III, Indiana CC; and John Benson of Totteridge GC also finished at 72.

This year marks the first time the Championship will be played as a stroke play event. The Middle-Amateur debuted in 1994 as a match play event that was played over four consecutive days. This year the player with the low gross score for 36 holes will be crowned the champion. The Championship is limited to male member's of Pennsylvania Golf Association member clubs, 25 years of age and older, who have a handicap index of 7.4 or lower.

Play continues tomorrow with tee times starting at 8 a.m. off No. 1 and No. 10 tees and continuing at 12:15 p.m. First-round scores will determine Tuesday’s second-round tee times. The leaders will tee off last. Next year’s Pennsylvania Middle-Amateur will be held at the CC of York.
