Decker dazzles with opening round 65
Pittsburgh, Pa. - Adam Decker, 29, of Exton, Pa. blistered the par-71 Pittsburgh Field Club on the first day of the Frank B. Fuhrer Pennsylvania Open. His round of six-under 65 included 10 birdies, four pars, and four bogies. Decker, who started his round on the 10th hole, got off to a fast start by birdying three out of his first four holes (the 10th, 11th, and 13th). He also finished strong with birdies on two of his last three holes (the 7th and 8th).
Ryan Sikora, 26, of North Huntingdon, Pa. had a chance to equal Decker's round but he bogeyed the final two holes after birdying 14, 15, and 16. He carded eight birdies in his round of five-under 67.
Chip Zimmerman, the low amateur, John Mazza, and Robert McClellan are tied for third place, three shots back of Decker. Seven players, including defending champion Steven Wheatcroft, stand four strokes back at two-under par 69. A total of 19 players broke par in today's opening round.
The 132-player field is comprised of amateurs and professionals from throughout the Commonwealth. Fifty-two players were exempt into the field with the other 80 qualifying last month at one of three sites. The Championship is limited to residents of Pennsylvania who have a handicap index of 7.4 or lower. The total purse is $50,000 with $10,000 going to the winner.
Tomorrow's second round will begin at 8 a.m. with players teeing off the first and 10th tees. The field will be cut to the low 40 players and ties after the second round.
