Knapp Wins W.C. Fownes Jr. Award
Sean Knapp prevailed in the 2004 Pennsylvania Amateur Player of the Year race. The pursuit of the W.C. Fownes, Jr. Award begins in May at Merion Golf Club's Hugh Wilson Invitational and is usually decided at the Pennsylvania Middle-Amateur or USGA Mid-Am.
W.C. Fownes, Jr. was the quintessential amateur golfer who led by example and whose good influence - personal and institutional - was extensive. W.C. Fownes' major golf credits include being a Pennsylvania Amateur and U.S. Amateur Champion, Walker Cup organizer, player and team captain, and USGA president.
The William C. Fownes, Jr. Amateur Player of the Year Award is given to the player that exemplifies the highest standards of excellence on the golf course in skill, sportsmanship, and etiquette in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Knapp, 42, of Oakmont, Pa. had a year that resembled his 1997 season when he won both the Pennsylvania Amateur and the Pennsylvania Middle-Amateur and tied for sixth in the Pennsylvania Open.
In July at the Pennsylvania Amateur at Fox Chapel GC, Knapp finished second, four stroke behind Blaine Peffley. In August at the Pennsylvania Open Championship Knapp finished tied for fifth and also tied for low amateur honors. Finally, in September at the Pennsylvania Middle-Amateur at Philadelphia Country Club, Knapp topped of his year with a victory.
This was Knapp's third Middle-Amateur crown, but he still has not captured that illusive second Pennsylvania Amateur title. He has finished second three times.
