Schlachter captures Mid-Am Championship in playoff
York, Pa. -- Paul Schlachter, 56, finished with a solid two putt par on the second playoff hole to capture his first Pennsylvania Middle-Amateur Championship at Country Club of York. Schlachter defeated James Bohn, Buknell GC, for his fifth Pennsylvania State championship. Schlachter, Club at Nevillewood, had previously won the Amateur Championship (1998, Bent Creek CC), the Senior Amateur Championship (2004, Saucon Valley CC) and the Senior Better-Ball Championship (2005, Huntsville GC).
Bohn, 35, got off to a slow start, going out in one-over-par 37, but he heated up on the back nine with two birdies and an eagle to finish at eight-under for the tournament.
Schlachter was on fire from the beginning with four birdies on the front nine to go along with four on the back. A bogey on No. 18 (391 yards, par 4) almost proved costly. But after Bohn missed an eight-foot birdie opportunity on his final hole; they headed to No. 18 for the second time. Bohn could not convert a second birdie opportunity however and Schlachter nailed a twelve foot par putt for a superb up-and-down from forty yards short of the green.
After Bohn failed to get up-and-down from a greenside bunker on No. 10 (334 yards, par 4), Schlachter two-putted for the victory.
"This victory is special because I was sick and I couldn't play golf for 8 weeks, so this feels real good," said Shlachter. When asked what he was thinking after he bogyed No. 18, "I thought that would have lost it for me. I thought Brownie would bring it home."
Ten players began the day within five shots of first-round leader David Brown. However, the pressure of a state championship seemed to weigh heavy on players minds as all tired and scrambled to stay level par on the homeward nine. Of the ten players who started the day at even par or better, only one, John Donnelly, managed to best his first day score. Bohn matched his opening round 69.
