Oglesby, Shields lead Pennsylvania Open
PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The amateur rebellion lasted just one day as two professionals posted two-day scores of 9-under-par 135 Tuesday to lead 40 players into the final round Wednesday of the Pennsylvania Golf Association’s 89th Open Championship at Sunnybrook Golf Club (par 72, 6,886 yards).
Former Pennsylvania Open champion Paul Oglesby of Ardmore carded seven birdies and a lone bogey Tuesday to post a 6-under-par 66, to tie Kevin Shields of Bethel Park, who had six birds and a bogey for a 5-under 67, giving both two-day totals of 135.
H. Robert McClellan, a professional from Butler, fired the low round of the day, a blistering 7-under-par 65 to bring him one shot off the lead with 136. Sean Farren, a Professional from Oakmont,Pa. carded a 3-under 69 for a total of 137.
The three amateur first-round leaders with 5-under-par 67s failed to break par on Tuesday. Roc Irey of Warrington, carded en even-par 72 for a total of 139. Chris Lange of Bryn Mawr posted a 2-over 74 for 141, and Malcolm Spatz of Pittsburgh soared to a 4-ovr 76 for 143.
All, however, made the cut at 145, as did low amateurs Tyler Brewington of Orangeville, who fired 70-68-138, and John Sawin of Haverford who followed a 71 on Monday with a 5-under-par performance Tuesday for a 67 and a 138 total.
Yet, 11 of the low 16 scorers are professionals, with six former Pennsylvania Open champions still in the field besides Oglesby. They are Roy Vucinich of Moon Township (140), Ryan Sikora of Greensburg (140), Stu Ingraham of Newtown Square (141), Terry Hertzog of Lititz (142), John Mazza of Beaver Falls (142), and Joe Boros of Saxonville (145).
Oglesby, 45, who won the Open in 1994 out of Hershey CC, has been a teaching professional at Merion GC for five years. Starting on the 10th hole Tuesday, he stood at even-par on the 16th tee, his 7th hole. That he got hot is an understatement. He birdied Nos. 16, 17, 18, 1, 4 and 5 with putts of four to 20 feet.
His formula for Wednesday as a co-leader: "I can’t hit it as long as these young guys, so I have to hit good irons and make some putts."
Shields, 33, is an assistant professional at Mount Lebanon Golf Course in Pittsburgh. He birdied Nos. 3, 5, 8, 10, 16 and 17, including three 2s with putts of 25, 15 and 15 feet, around a loan bogey on the 164-yard, par 3 No. 15. "I definitely putted well," he said.
His formula for Wednesday: "Make as many birdies as I possibly can. This is a ball striker’s course and you have to make birdies. No one is going to give it to us. You’ve got to get at it right out of the gate."
McClellan, 25, is a professional at Olde Stonewall GC in Ellwood City. "I hit it tight all day," said, after hitting 16 greens. "I had birdie putts on almost every hole." He had eight birds and one bogey in his round of 65.
With the cut at the 40 lowest scores and ties, 40 golfers qualified for Wednesday’s final round, with the cut at 1-over-par 145. There were no ties. The round will begin at 7:30 a.m.
