Lancaster County tandem sets pace
at Pennsylvania Amateur
FLEETWOOD, Pa.–A pair of Lancaster County counterparts, Jarred Texter of Lancaster CC and Dan Walters of Meadia Heights GC, carded impressive 3-under-par 67s on Monday to share the opening-round lead of the 93rd Amateur Championship at Moselem Springs GC (par 70, 6,824 yards). Temperatures reached the high 90s as a field of 132 players opened the 54-hole, stroke play championship.All players will compete over 18 more holes tomorrow with the low 40 competitors and ties moving into Wednesday’s final round.
Texter and Walters were only two of six players in the field to post under-par totals.
Drew Panebianco of Talamore at Oak Terrace CC stands alone in third place at 2-under par and Chad Bricker of Waynesboro CC, Kyle Davis of Inniscrone GC and Chris Lange of Overbrook GC are tied for fourth at 1 under.
"I wanted to get off to a good start on a good golf course and I did a little bit better than that," said Texter, 20, of Millersville, Pa. "I thought even or 1 under would be a good score today. I’m going to go out and try to post something good again tomorrow and see if I can give myself an opportunity [to win the championship] on the final day. That’s why you sign up for these tournaments."
Added Walters, 22, of Lancaster, Pa., "It’s a tough golf course and I definitely feel on a few of the holes par is a good score. I’m definitely happy to have a great start to the week. If you keep putting yourself in contention, hopefully you win one [eventually]."
Last year, Walters tied for second behind champion Alex Knoll of Bethlehem GC and in 2004 he tied for seventh. Texter’s best finish in an Amateur was a tie for 13th last year.
Walters posted the first 67 of the day after teeing off at 8:40 a.m.
The recent graduate of Rollins College posted an even-par 35 on the tougher back nine, his front side, before recording four birdies and a bogey on the front nine for a 32. He finished with birdies on Nos. 8 (par 4, 474 yards), after he hit a 7-iron from 175 yards to eight feet, and 9 (par 4, 374 yards), where he lofted a gap wedge from a short distance to six feet behind the hole. Walters also carded back nine birdies on Nos. 2 (par 4, 404 yards) and 4 (par 4, 376 yards). Sandwiched in between that, however, was a bogey on No. 3 (par 3, 191 yards) courtesy of a wayward tee ball.
Texter began his Amateur at 1:05 p.m. on the front nine.
Knowing that is the side for scoring, the Junior to-be at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas notched four birdies and zero bogeys. He put up red numbers on Nos. 2 (par 4, 404 yards), 4 (par 4, 376 yards), 6 (par 4, 412 yards) and 9 (par 4, 374 yards).
Texter drained a 20-footer on No. 2, knocked a Lob Wedge to a foot on No. 4, hit a pitching wedge to six feet on No. 6 and dropped another Lob Wedge to two feet on No. 9. A bogey on No. 11 (par 4, 441 yards) as a result of a poor tee shot cost Texter a shot before he finished with seven straight pars.
"The key to the round was No. 14 (par 4, 442 yards)," said Texter, the reigning Lancaster County Amateur Champion. "I was in the rough and I hit a 5-iron from 186 yards [over the trees to a back hole location] for a really good chance at birdie. I missed the putt but that kept things going. I also made a great up-and-down from 110 yards on No. 16 (par 4, 412 yards) to save par."
Knoll, the defending champion, posted a 3-over-par 73 and stands tied for 28th place. Lange won the Amateur in 1999.
Moselem Springs, designed by George Fazio, the uncle of renowned designer Tom Fazio, was founded in 1962 and has hosted a Pennsylvania Open Championship (1996) and an U.S. Women’s Open Championship (1968).
