Bricker, Davis punch ticket into
Amateur Championship final group
FLEETWOOD, Pa.–Chad Bricker of Waynesboro CC and Kyle Davis of Inniscrone GC each carded a second consecutive 1-under-par 69 in Tuesday’s scorching heat at Moselem Springs GC (par 70, 6,824 yards) to move to 2-under par (138 total) and grab a share of the lead in the 93rd Amateur Championship conducted by the Pennsylvania Golf Association. Wicked temperatures again provided the main storyline, ranging into the high 90 degrees with a heat real feel of 110 degrees. That heat and a demanding golf course accounted for only six of the state’s top 132 players (the field size) breaking par on the day.Tomorrow’s final round begins at 7 a.m. The cut line for the low 40 players and ties fell at 9-over-par 149 with a total of 46 players advancing to Day Three.
Bricker and Davis, both collegiate sophomores, begin the quest for their first State Amateurs at 9:20 a.m.
Bricker, who beat a little bit of the heat with an 8:30 a.m. tee time, put himself into the final pairing of the championship with a strong opening-nine performance. The sophomore to-be at Penn State University made the turn at 2-under-par 33 with birdies on No. 12 (par 5, 515 yards) and No. 13 (par 3, 224 yards). Bricker two-putted from about 50 feet on the par 5, 12th for a four and then knocked a 4-iron to five feet and made the birdie putt on No. 13.
Bricker, 19, of Waynesboro, Pa., moved to 3-under par on the morning with a three on No. 1 (par 4, 402 yards) courtesy of a 9-iron from 145 yards out that landed six feet away, but bogeyed No. 3 (par 3, 191 yards) and No. 8 (par 4, 474 yards) to finish at 1-under par.
"I didn’t finish the way I wanted to either day," said Bricker, who was at 5-under par at one point in yesterday’s first round before carding a 1-under 69. "The key is to stay focused. You have to take it one shot at a time and stay in the present. And that’s hard [with the heat]. I’ve never sweated like this before."
Davis, who opened his second round at 12:15 p.m. on the back nine like Bricker, began his day by landing an 8-iron from 145 yards to 10 feet on No. 10 (par 4, 397 yards) and converting the birdie chance. However, not many more putts would fall for the reigning Golf Association of Philadelphia Amateur Champion.
Davis, a sophomore to-be at the University of Central Florida, would go on to hit 15 greens in regulation, but record an eye-catching 32 putts.
After his initial birdie, an errant tee ball cost Davis a stroke on No. 17 (par 4, 412 yards) and he made the turn at even par. Davis did manage to drain a 20-footer up the hill on No. 4 (par 4, 376 yards) before finishing with five straight pars.
"I was trying to stay dry and keep my focus, but it’s tough when it is so hot," said Davis, 20, of Kennett Square, Pa. "My round could have been a lot better but I had too many putts. My execution is good, but it’s a matter of reading the greens and gaining more confidence."
Davis is fresh off an impressive performance at the Eastern Amateur a few weeks ago in which he placed fifth. He carded a 10-under par 60 in the second round.
Right behind the leaders at 1-under par are Chris Schultz of Fox Chase GC and Jarred Texter of Lancaster CC.
Schultz, 34, of Shillington, Pa., is competing in his first Amateur. He shot a 1-over-par 71 yesterday.
Texter, 20, of Millersville, Pa., shared the first-round lead with Dan Walters of Meadia Heights GC after both players posted 3-under par 67s. Texter, who called his round up-and-down finished with a 2-over-par 72 to fall a shot back.
Walters, 22, of Lancaster, Pa., carded a 4-over-par 74 and is three strokes back at 1-over par. Defending champion Alex Knoll of Bethlehem GC also stands three shots behind the leaders after posting a 2-under-par 68.
Moselem Springs, designed by George Fazio, the uncle of renowned designer Tom Fazio, was founded in 1962 and has hosted a Pennsylvania Open Championship (1996) and an U.S. Women’s Open Championship (1968).
