Knapp Adds Another POY to Trophy Case
Sean Knapp accepts the Low Amateur Trophy from John McMurdy, Jr.
Sean Knapp, from Oakmont, PA, was awarded the 2012 W.C. Fownes Player of the Year award, his third such award. Knapp also received his 13th Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Player of the Year award this year.
"It's just a real thrill to be competing with these guys," Knapp responded when asked what it's like playing, week in and week out, against such a high level of competition in Pennsylvania.
Knapp edged Nathan Smith by 190 points in the final tally. He was chosen as the first pick for Team Pennsylvania which competed in the USGA State Team Championship.
"Playing for Pennsylvania in the USGA State Team Championship was the goal for this year, and I really played some strong golf coming down the stretch at the Open. To finish the way I did really meant a lot and secured my spot on the team. It was really the highlight of the season for me, to be chosen to play with one of the legends of Pennsylvania golf, Nathan Smith, and also one of the nicest guys out there, in Andrew Mason."
Knapp earned points in every event he played in 2012. He won his third G. Dressler Amateur Public Links, was medalist in The Sigel and a semifinalist, qualified for the US Amateur Public Links, finished T-5 at the PA Amateur, Low Amateur at the PA Open, and was a quarterfinalist in the US Middle-Amateur.
Next year, he plans to play a little less and concentrate on local Championships. His main goal is to qualify for the US Mid-Am and compete in the PA Mid-Am, which he has had to miss in the past couple of years due to scheduling.
"The clock of time is ticking, and at the end of the day, I'm 50 years old. I'm still hungry to compete, but who knows how long this run will last. I'm just trying to stay in the moment."
