Mayne named Senior Player of the Year
Scott Mayne captured the 57th Senior Amateur en route to earning POY
BROOMALL, Pa. - Just as he did to win the 57th Pennsylvania Senior Amateur Championship, Deer Run Golf Club’s Scott Mayne narrowly edged out Overbrook Golf Club’s Oscar Mestre, 495.5 points to 475.5, to take home the 2016 Senior Player of the Year honor.
“The state of Pennsylvania has a lot of great Senior golfers and I am humbled to have been able to win this award,” said Mayne, 57, of Harrisburg, Pa. “It’s an accomplishment that I value, as there are many other great players that could have won the title and many other great players that have won the title in the past.”
In the Senior Amateur Championship at Lancaster Country Club, Mayne secured his first win in the event thanks to a 5-over 145 total in the 36-hole event. Heading to the closing hole of the championship, Mayne and Mestre were all tied up at 5-over par. Mestre, playing in front of Mayne, faltered there with a bogey while Mayne tapped in for par to take home the hardware.
“I think the venue for the Senior Championship this year was first class,” he said. “I’ve always looked at Lancaster as one of the finest courses I have played. That was a highlight for me.”
Mayne also garnered points for a T11th finish in the 12th Art Wall, Jr. Memorial Championship at Fox Hill Country Club, in addition to a solid T7th result in the 27th Four-Ball Championship at Out Door Country Club.
His award-winning season was highlighted in the end by qualifying for the U.S. Senior Amateur for the second time in three years. Although he successfully qualified for match play, Mayne went on to fall in the Round-of-64, 3 &2, to Brady Exber of Las Vegas, Nev. Nonetheless, it’s no secret that Mayne has proven he can compete with some of the state’s, and the nation’s, best players.
“It’s always hard to qualify for the U.S. Senior Amateur, but it is special when you do. I need to find a way to get past the first round of match play though because I seem to qualify comfortably for the match play but I lose in the first round,” said Mayne. “I wasn't sure how the year would develop but I started to feel better as the year went on, and was able to play quite a bit throughout the year. I am very satisfied with my game overall but there is always room to improve.”
