CC of York's Brandon Knaub captures 90^th Amateur Championship

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa.-A few early birdies and steady all-around play helped Brandon Knaub of the CC of York eliminate any drama from Wednesday's final round of the 90^th Amateur Championship at The Country Club of Scranton (Old Course, par 72, 6,780 yards).

Knaub finished at 12-under-par for the 54 holes (67-68-69) en route to his first Amateur title, four shots clear of the field.

James Bohn of Bucknell GC, the 2002 state Middle-Amateur champion, finished in second at 8-under-par and Clint Deibert of Doylestown CC grabbed third at 7-under-par.

"This means a lot," said Knaub, who posted a final round 4-under-par 69. "I was real confident coming in with my game and my swing." And everything worked out.

Knaub, who played the past three years for the University of Missouri, is set turn pro at the Pennsylvania Open this August. However, his decision may be delayed a few weeks if he qualifies for the U.S. Amateur.

On Wednesday, Knaub made it clear early that this was his Amateur title to win or lose.

An aggressive 8-iron on No. 3 (par 3, 182 yards) dropped to six feet. His birdie made him 10 under.

On No. 4 (par 5, 514 yards), Knaub went under par again, this time knocking a wedge to eight feet left of the flag. A smooth putting stroke bumped his advantage up again.

Bogeys on No. 5 (par 3, 204 yards) and No. 7 (par 4, 399 yards) steadied his momentum a bit, but a tap-in birdie on No. 8 (par 4, 323 yards) eliminated any doubt.

A 40-foot birdie bomb on No. 11 (par 3, 161 yards) from the left side of the green started the coronation.

"That's a nice way to start a round," said Knaub of his early birdies. "Honestly, I didn't look at the scoreboard all day. I just tried to play the golf course."

Bohn, who started at 4-under-par, five back of Knaub, made an early surge with three birdies in his first five holes - at No. 2 (par 4, 405 yards), No. 4 (par 5, 514 yards) and No. 5 (par 3, 204 yards).

"I started to get pretty nervous then because I've never really been in that position," said Bohn, 33, of Lewisburg. "My target score for the day was still 4 or 5 under and to see what happened. Realistically, I needed help. I mean he had to shoot a few over par. And that wasn't going to happen."

Bohn made the turn at 3-under-par 32 after a bogey and another birdie, but posted only a 1-under-par 36 on the back nine for a 68.

This was Bohn's top finish since the CC of Scranton last hosted the Amateur in 1997. That year he finished fourth.

Deibert, 21, of Doylestown, eagled No. 12 (par 5, 483 yards) after lofting a 5-iron in close and birdied No. 13 (par 4, 382 yards) and No. 18 (par 5, 482 yards) to get his score to 7-under-par.

"I'm not surprised [Brandon Knaub] ran away with, he's a great player," said Deibert. "I was playing for second. He wasn't going to fold."

Robinson and Stewart, who both started the day at 6-under-par and in a tie for second, struggled.

Robinson, 45, of North Wales, triple bogeyed the second hole to eliminate his chances. He finished 17^th. Stewart, 19, of Devon, failed to get out of the greenside bunker on No. 6 and recorded a double bogey. He placed 10^th.

The 2004 Amateur Championship is set for Fox Chapel GC in Pittsburgh, Pa.
