Pabst Leads After First Round of the Amateur
Pittsburgh, PA- Day one of the 110th Pennsylvania Amateur is in the books at the Pittsburgh Field Club. Two Penn St University teammates hold the top spots heading into day 2. Elmhurst Country Club and Penn St. Sophomore Billy Pabst shot a 30 on the front nine on the way to a 6-under par 65. Pabst made 8 birdies and 2 bogeys on the day. Trailing by one is fellow Penn Stater and Oakmont Country Club member Jimmy Meyers. Meyers made 7 birdies and 2 bogies for his 5-under par 66. Karl Frisk, the R. Jay Sigel Match Play Champion and South Carolina-Aiken player sits one shot farther back with a 67. Frisk is the current Player of the Year leader.
I total 30 players shot even-par or better. Two former champions, Nathan Smith and Rick Stimmel shot even par 71.
123 players will play their second round tomorrow. After 36-holes, the low the low 40 player and ties will make the cut for the final 18-holes on Wednesday.
