Cordaro and Eichenlaub Lead After Day 1 at 34th Four-Ball
To state it mildly, Anthony Cordaro and Evan Eichenlaub have had some success over the past two years in the Pennsylvania Golf Association’s (PAGA) Four Ball Championships. The duo fired a nine-under 63 at Toftrees Golf Resort in State College to take a two-stroke lead into Tuesday’s final round. That score combined with last year’s winning score puts the defending champions from Saucon Valley Country Club at -21 through the 54 holes they have played in the event.
LedgeRock’s Grant Skyllas and The Steel Club’s Jake Haberstumpf stand alone in second place following a seven-under 65. They posted an eight birdie, one-bogey round on day one. Sam Pancoast (Radley Run Country Club and Colin Smith (Bidermann Golf Club) are third at -6 followed by a pair of teams at -4, Colonial Country Club’s Dave Pender and David Urbassik and Southpointe Golf Club’s Tim Novic and Lance George. In all, 15 teams posted red numbers in round one.
Asked about their success again this year, Cordaro pointed at his partner and said “horse.” “He added “I birdied 10 and then my score didn’t count again on the back. We play well together, I am short and straight and he is long and straight,” he said with a laugh.
Both leaders had a pair of birdies on the front nine as Eichenlaub birdied the second and fourth holes and Cordaro matching the effort with back-to-back birdies on six and seven. Then, after a Cordaro birdie on 10, Eichenlaub went on a tear birdieing five of the next seven holes. A bogey on the closing hole was the only blemish on their card.
“We compartmentalize well,” said Eichenlaub. We don’t let the moment get the best of us and just play the course and help each other out.”
Play gets underway in round two Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.
The Pennsylvania Golf Association would like to thank the staff and membership of Toftrees Golf Resort for the hospitality shown during the tournament, with additional thanks going to DICK’S Sporting Goods for sponsorship of the event.
