McCool earns Senior Player of the Year Honors

Robin McCool successfully defended his Senior Amateur title in 2014 at Waynesborough Country Club

Robin McCool, a member at Saucon Valley Country Club and resident of Bethlehem, Pa., is certainly no stranger to collecting hardware.  McCool amassed 375 points to capture his first W. C. Fownes, Jr. Senior Player of the Year honor.  McCool used a successful title defense in the Senior Amateur Championship to secure his place at the top of the standings.  He held off a late charging Gary E. Daniels, Applebrook Golf Club, and senior circuit stalwart Paul Schlachter, The Club at Nevillewood.

“It’s an extreme honor to be named the Association Senior Player of the Year,” said McCool.  “It is a dream come true for me to play against such strong competition on some of the best golf courses in the nation.”

As McCool aimed to repeat at the Senior Amateur hosted by Waynesborough Country Club in Paoli, Pa., he found himself head-to-head with familiar fellow-competitor Schlachter.  As the two heavyweights exchanged blows throughout the back nine, it was McCool who came out on top in a nail-biter.  For his victory, he earned 350 points toward his final total of 375.  Another 25 points came by way of a quarterfinal appearance in the Senior Match Play Championship at RiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve in Phoenixville, Pa.  In a round of 16 match, McCool defeated Mike Vassil, Country Club of Scranton, to advance to the quarterfinals, where he would bow out to John Rodney, Diamond Run Country Club.

Asked to summarize the season, McCool stated, “My game is usually best in July and August, and 2014 was no different.  I won the Bethlehem Senior Stroke Play by 15 shots, then the very next day shared medalist honors with Chip Lutz at the GAP Brewer Cup.  I played well in match play and eventually lost to Chip.  Later in July, I won my 11th club championship at Saucon Valley, 1-up in the 36-hole final against defending champion Mark McGowan, and then finished out July by winning our senior club championship.  I was hitting the ball great, but literally couldn’t make a 2-foot putt.  Gene Mattare, SVCC GM and Director of Golf, approached me with a putting tip that helped immensely and directly contributed to the Senior Amateur success, which was of course, the highlight of the year.”

Congratulations to Robin McCool on earning the 2014 W. C. Fownes, Jr. Senior Player of the Year honor!
