The first round of the 1998 Senior Championship was held on the West course of the Country Club of Hershey. Four time champion John Guenther Jr., Heidelberg, led a field of 66 players after one round. Guenther was the only player to break par on the West course. Three players trailed by one shot, along with defending champion Brian Sachs, Bucknell, only two shots back.
Starting the second day of play, Phil Saylor, Sunnehanna, trailed leader John Guenther Jr. by six shots. Saylor made five birdies to shoot a tournament low three under-par 68. With the clubhouse leader, Saylor in at two over-par 146, and first round leader, Guenther, even par through 33 holes, the tournament seemed to be wrapped up. However two bogies on the last three holes brought Guenther into a tie with Saylor. The championship would have to be decided in a sudden death play-off.
Phil Saylor only needed one hole of sudden death to defeat John Guenther Jr. Saylor added this 1998 Senior Amateur Championship title to his 1998 Senior Better-Ball Championship title, making this year one to remember.
